Frequently Asked Questions
Who can study at PCC?
- Most students who are in nonimmigrant status study at PCC in the F-1 international student status. Visit the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s website for a list of all nonimmigrant visa classes and whether it allows for full-time or part-time study.Notes:
- Foreign Nationals who are U.S. Permanent Residents, on approved Refugee or Asylum status, can study in the United States without any restrictions.
- Individuals in the U.S. on a Visitor or Tourist visa (B1/2) or ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) cannot study in credit courses at PCC.
- Individuals in the U.S. on a nonimmigrant visa can apply for a change of status to the F-1 visa through USCIS.
Questions about study while on a nonimmigrant visa other than the F-1 visa should be discussed with an immigration lawyer and/or the Department of Homeland Security.
What can I study at PCC?
- F-1 international students must select programs that are offered all or mostly in-person. For a list of programs that you can study, and for more information, please visit our Programs for F-1 Students page.
Can I work while studying?
- Students on an F-1 visa are allowed to work part-time, on-campus only. PCC has many student jobs such as working in the international office, cafeteria, bookstore, computer labs, etc. On-campus employment is an option for current students, but it is not guaranteed and it is not a sufficient plan for how you will afford future tuition costs. You can read more about PCC’s on-campus employment for international students policy here.
What is a term? When is each term?
- For many colleges, the academic year is divided into terms; the most common terms are semesters and quarters.
- Semesters divide the academic year in two, a fall (or autumn) semester and a spring semester. Semesters are about 15 weeks long. The fall semester usually runs August to December, and the spring semester January to May.
- Quarters divide the academic year into four pieces, a fall (or autumn) quarter, a winter quarter, a spring quarter, and a summer quarter. Quarters are about 10 weeks long. The fall quarter typically runs September to December, the winter quarter January to March, the spring quarter March to June, and the summer quarter June to August.
- At PCC, we use the quarter system. As an international student, you are required to be enrolled in 3 terms per year. However, you can study for all 4 terms if you want.

PCC provides an Annual Security Report meeting Clery Act requirements. The report shares safety programs, policies, and crime data for the past three years. It also includes steps you can take to maintain a safe campus for everyone.
